Education Zone: Involute Gear Teeth Profile
An involute gear has profiles of the gear teeth that are involutes of a circle. Involute gears are the most popular power transmission devices since meshing of involute gear teeth are characterized by a line of action with constant direction and pressure angle, which reduces the variation in the torque transferred between mating gears. The profile of standard involute gear only depends on the number of teeth, pressure angle and module. This technical note contains a step-by-step derivation of the parametric equations that defines the involute gear teeth profile.
